Sebastian had just escaped from the silver void between portals after being trapped by his nemesis with his companion Ashleen, only to be trapped in a different way as the king plans a celebration for the newly returned legendary figure Gerid Aramathea, the high king and immortal imprisoned by the Dark One for generations. As the one who led the expedition to find the high king, he is celebrated even as the humble battle mage wishes for a little peace and quiet after the long journey.
After months away from his homeland, Sebastian is ready to research the many things he has learned along the way. Finding a black smith, the mage first begins to learn about metal to try and discover the secret of the ancient weapon used to make his magical Hollow Sword. Along with his new assistant and student, Ashleen, a wilder wizard; the battle mage works to become a sword smith to create more swords for his fellow mages while researching the mysterious runes gifted to a handful of his people by the mysterious sea folk.
Peace and quiet is hard to come by for the battle mage as he is pulled away for parades, celebrations in the king’s castle and Ashleen decides that she wants to be more than just his friend and student.
As if these weren’t enough distractions, the Dark One’s spies continue to work to cause dissention among Southwall’s cities as his nemesis, Palose, uses his portal magic to sneak into his former country to cause more trouble for the king and his people. Sebastian is called on to try and figure out how to stop him with only one lucky cast of the spell behind him.
How will the battle mage juggle serving his king, figuring out the enemy’s magic and fending off the pretty girl who thinks he may be the one at the same time? Oh, and he has only a few weeks before his girlfriend returns home besides.

This book is a big improvement over the last book and I am so glad it was. If this book had been the disaster the last one was I think I probably would have dropped the series. Not that this book did not have its issues. Bas’s indecisiveness in the area of his relationship with Ashleen was over dramatized, over emphasized (I might be a bit bias; I like Ashleen’s character much better than Yara’s) and ultimately anticlimactic, without being satisfactorily cleaned up. This however is my only real complaint about this book.
The rest of the book puts the story arc back on track and brings back the magic innovation, character growth, the prose is better, and the characters seemingly start acting themselves again. There are of course the same editing issues that have plagued the series as a whole but they are a very minor inconvenience.
The best thing about this book however is that the author seems to have gotten his groove back; this book left me feeling excited about things to come. It renewed my interest in the series enough that I went back and reread the previous novels to re-experience what l liked so much about them. Not many authors are able to get back on track after a flop like the last book. So if you are on the fence about continuing the series let your mind be at ease this book is a solid addition to the series and I hope the next is out sooner than later.

Battle Mage Forging New Steel The High King A Tale of Alus Book 9 edition by Donald Wigboldy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Great read. Highly recommend the whole series
Really enjoyed the story, Can't wait for the next installment.
This book progresses the the story but it just ok compared to the other books.
I have enjoyed the battle Mage series. Please keep them coming. A good read with heavy battle scenes, now mix in love interest with beautiful women and you get a great fantasy.
I wonder if the last battle is coming soon. I am glad to see something's have been settled though. I also wonder if some characters we met in other books will be teaming up with owl for the last battle.
I enjoyed the path the story took in this edition. While I enjoyed the predecessor, it feels like we are back to the original focus of the series. We keep getting glimpses that the Owl is evolving, to what extent is TBD. Good pace to the story, filled with personal victories and failures for Bas. Hopefully we are past his love life struggles for a while. I like the struggles, it just tended to go on and on.
A great addition and furtherance of the series. Great to see this series back on track.
After the last book I was a little worried about the series but this book has brought everything back on track. It would have been nice to see Bas in some more magical combat one on one vs. wizards but this is still a great read.
I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment in the series.
